How to Install a Pool Liner Without Wrinkles
Updated August 28, 2025
Whether you are installing a pool liner for the first time or you’re a pro, unexpected wrinkles are, unfortunately, a common issue.
Nothing ruins that perfect summer pool moment like diving in and seeing a giant wrinkle at the bottom of your pool. Wrinkles are unsightly, uncomfortable underfoot, and can even shorten the lifespan of your liner.
The good news is that with the right steps, you can install your pool liner without wrinkles and ensure your family can splash, cannonball, and float in style all summer long.
A smooth base, a warm liner, and teamwork during filling are the secret ingredients. No wrinkles, no worries—just endless summer fun.
Follow these steps from the swimming pool experts at LinerWorld so you can learn how to install an above ground pool liner without wrinkles. Let’s dive in.
Set the Stage for A Successful, Wrinkle-Free Installation
Before you even get started installing your liner, it’s important that you set yourself up for success.
Don’t Rush the Process
Installing a pool liner isn’t something you want to power through. Give yourself plenty of time. Rushing often leads to misaligned liners, trapped wrinkles, or damage to your liner. Plan for a day when you won’t feel pressured to rush due to weather or other obligations.
Make Sure You Have the Right Liner Size
Double-check (then triple-check!) that you’ve ordered the correct liner size for your pool. An oversized liner will leave you battling wrinkles, while one that’s too small may not even fit. Measure your pool diameter, wall height, and confirm whether you need an overlap or beaded liner before you start.

Gather Your Team
We never recommend tackling a liner installation alone. A helper or two makes it easier to center the liner, smooth out wrinkles, and keep the process moving at a comfortable pace. Grab a family member or a friend before you start!
Now you’re ready to get started!
Start With a Smooth Base
Before installing your new pool liner, make sure the pool floor is clean, level, and free of rocks, sticks, and clumps. A flat, smooth surface minimizes the chance that debris will get stuck under the liner and cause wrinkles.
Use a tamper to pack down the ground and a pool liner pad or sand base to give your liner a soft, even surface.

Install Your Liner on a Warm Day
The best time to install a swimming pool liner is when the weather is hot and the sun is shining. The warmth helps the vinyl become more flexible and easier to work with.
Pick a sunny day and lay the liner out in the sun for 30 minutes before you begin installation. This will make it more pliable and help it stretch smoothly into place, resulting in fewer wrinkles.
Line Up & Secure Your Liner Carefully
Whether you have a beaded or overlap liner, center it evenly and secure it in place. You want a balanced stretch so it doesn’t pull too tightly on one side or the other.
If you have an overlap liner, drape it over the walls and adjust so it hangs evenly all the way around. Then, use coping strips or clips to secure the liner in place.

For beaded liners, insert the liner’s bead into the receiver track by applying gentle pressure and working your way around the pool. Double-check that the bead is fully seated into the track, providing a snug fit.

Regularly inspect the liner for any signs of loosening or displacement as you move forward in the installation process.
Work Out Wrinkles Before Adding Water
When installing your pool liner, you want to remove all the wrinkles BEFORE you start filling the pool with water.
Many pool owners assume the water will push out the wrinkles, but that’s not the case. Once you start adding water, wrinkles become locked in place.
Use your hands, feet, or a soft push broom to slowly push wrinkles away from the center of the pool and toward the edges of the liner. Wear water shoes with soft soles to avoid causing damage to the vinyl.
This step takes time! It’s a good opportunity to get some help from a family member or friend to make the process go a little bit faster.
Fill the Pool & Smooth as You Go
Once you’re confident the bottom is smooth and you got the wrinkles out, continue to slowly fill the pool.
Keep an eye on the liner as it stretches up the walls. If you notice any wrinkles starting to form, stop the water, adjust, and smooth them out before moving on.
Again, having some help is a big time saver. That way, you don’t have to keep getting in and out of the pool to adjust the water flow.
