Winterizing Your Swimming Pool

Closing your swimming pool, also known as winterizing, is a necessary process. Taking the time to winterize your swimming pool correctly protects it during the off-season and makes opening it the following summer quick and easy. Skipping specific winterizing steps can lead to a pool owner’s worst nightmare; damaged pool liners, cracked pipes, or unbalanced water chemistry. The industry experts at LinerWorld are here to give you winterizing tips to ensure your swimming pool is maintained properly for the off-season!

When Is The Best Time To Close An Above Ground Swimming Pool?

The best time to close your above ground swimming pool is when temperatures start to drop to or below 60 degrees consistently. Regarding which month, most pool owners agree that September is a good time for winterizing. Before you start closing, take the time to thoroughly clean the water of any debris, leaves, sand, and twigs.

What Should Pool Water Chemistry Levels Be When Winterizing?

After your pool is clean, balance the water chemistry levels. (Note: this must be done about one week before you plan on closing your pool.) Your chemical levels should be within the following:

  • pH: 7.2 – 7.6
  • Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 180 – 220 ppm

My Pool Water Is Clean & The Chemistry Levels Are Balanced – Now What?

Cleaning your pool water and balancing the water chemistry levels are the first steps in winterizing your swimming pool. Next, follow the steps carefully below:

  1. Once levels are balanced, shock your pool water by following the packaging directions or adding about one pound per 10,000 gallons of water.
  2. After your chlorine level becomes balanced, add winter algaecide.
  3. Next, drain the water to about an inch or two below the skimmer box and return. It is extremely important to keep the water level from going down further than that; otherwise, your pool liner may shrink and become cracked.
  4. Once the water level is below the filter, empty your pool’s filter system of any remaining water, clean out any debris and dirt, and store the filter unit indoors for the winter.

Last Steps In Winterizing A Swimming Pool

Be sure to remove any ladders and stairs from your swimming pool; then, the last thing to do is install the winter cover. Add any floats necessary to keep the cover from touching the water (like our winter pool air pillow), then add the cover and secure it tightly using a cable and winch.

Just like that, your swimming pool is winterized! If you have other questions about closing your pool for the season, you can contact the professionals at LinerWorld. We’re here to help!
